Ruth: From Bitter to Sweet by John Currid

Review: This wonderful work from the Welwyn Commentary Series is rich, insightful, and beautifully composed. It is obvious that a lot of time, work and research went into this book, but it is still written in a way that is organized, concise, and easy to understand. Ruth: From Bitter to Sweet by John Currid reads well, and is not overwhelming or written above the reader's head, as some commentaries sometimes seem to be.

The structure of this commentary follows the Book of Ruth from the Bible, and contains comprehensive insight on the following elements (taken from the Contents):

  • Part 1: Setting the scene (Ruth 1:1-5)
    • The setting of suffering (Ruth 1:-5)
  • Part 2: Naomi and her Moabite daughters-in-law (Ruth 1:6-22)
    • Graciousness in the midst of suffering (Ruth 1:6-9)
    • Orpah and Ruth respond (Ruth 1:10-14)
    • Ruth's confession (Ruth 1:15-18)
    • Homecoming (Ruth 1:19-22)
  • Part 3: In the fields of Bethlehem (Ruth 2:1-23)
    • Ruth gleans in the fields (Ruth 2:1-7)
    • Conversations between Ruth and Boaz (Ruth 2:8-17)
    • Ruth reports to Naomi (Ruth 2:18-23)
  • Part 4: The scene at the threshing floor (Ruth 3:1-18)
    • Naomi's plan (Ruth 3:1-6)
    • At the threshing floor (Ruth 3:7-13)
    • Back to Bethlehem (Ruth 3:14-18)
  • Part 5: Redemption (Ruth 4:1-22)
    • The courtroom scene (Ruth 4:1-12)
    • The descendant (Ruth 4:13-22)
In addition to adding enhancing detail to this beautiful story, the format of this novel is also really well done. Virtually every page of this 137 page commentary consists of a few small bite-sized Bible verses followed by a few sentences to expound upon the material.

I highly recommend Ruth: From Bitter to Sweet by John Currid. I expect that after reading it, the book of Ruth will come alive even more so each time you go through the Bible during your devotional time.

1 Kings: An EP Study Commentary by John A. Davies

Title: 1 Kings: An EP Study Commentary

Author: John A. Davies

How did I get this book: A complimentary review copy was provided to me by Cross Focused Reviews (A Service of Cross Focused Media, LLC). I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Review: First of all, I wanted to say that I really like the fact that the sales of this book help promote missionary work. It's great when you can feed your passion for discovering the LORD on a deeper level, enjoy a great book that not only increases your knowledge and understanding, but also helps you to grow more spiritually, and to have the satisfaction of knowing that in doing so, you are simultaneously sowing into the edification of others.

While there are an abundance of positives to this book and elements that I enjoyed tremendously, there is one phrase in the material that I felt I could not overlook or exclude from my review, and I want to get it out of the way before going further into the rest of what this incredible commentary has to offer.

In 1 Kings: An EP Study Commentary, John A. Davies does say that Jesus is David's son. While this is not entirely inaccurate as far as scripture goes, and I do understand that the author was referring to Jesus coming from the lineage of David, I am concerned that this statement could be misunderstood by some readers.

Obviously, if you are serious enough about the Bible to read a commentary on the books within, you probably know the book well enough to have discernment as well as a clear vision of where you stand theologically. Anyone reading this would probably already know that Jesus is God's Son, and that He came from the lineage of David, and also understand what John A. Davies means when he says that Jesus is David's Son. I just wanted to put that out there.

In addition to taking the inquiries of the reader and stimulating them, this amazing book takes a wonderful story told in a unique way, and expounds upon its contents with concise and insightful detail. All of the chapters in this book correspond to the chapters in 1 Kings, making it easy to navigate.

As far as a commentary goes, this book is absolutely extraordinary. It is very evident that it took years to perfect this masterpiece on 1 Kings, and as a reader, this work makes you feel privileged to enjoy something so beautiful and precious.

If you have any interest at all in 1 Kings, or commentaries, this is the book for you. It is truly the best one I have read to date by far. Better hurry, Amazon only has 2 left in stock!

Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into Your Comfortable Life by Jeff Goins

Title: Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into Your Comfortable Life

Author: Jeff Goins

How did I get this book: A complimentary review copy was provided to me by Cross Focused Reviews (A Service of Cross Focused Media, LLC). I was not required to write a positive review. Review: Wrecked is a great audio book for our generation. Yes, you read that correctly, I did just say, 'audio book.' It is easier sometimes to fit an audio book into life. In this digital age, when I have to put down my book and drive somewhere, I no longer have to settle for music. I can stream or play a book over my car stereo or even from an app on my smart phone.

Wrecked is read by its author, Jeff Goins, and speaks to the audience about more. Have you ever thought there was more to life, or wondered what your purpose might be? This book is for you.

It addresses selfless service, speaking to the life we think about living but for whatever reason, have settled for less. You can be fulfilled, you can find purpose in the middle of pain, and the answer to the thing that you think is lacking, might surprise you.

What if you could live in the "tension between the next adventure and the daily mundane?" This challenge spoke to me. I know I only get one time around on this planet before I get the privilege to show Jesus what I did with what He gave me.

So when I think about what He gave me, and what He did with His life, giving it away, it is that itself that sets the true example.

If you are unhappy or not satisfied, try getting yourself off of your mind, reach out, and help someone. Live life to give it away, love intentionally, and you will find something you didn't have before.

I would summarize this work as the guidebook to rising above, chasing the adventure, living the dream, and loving hard through service. It is one of those special books that after you listen to it, you are never the same.

Organic Outreach For Families by Kevin G. Harney & Sherry Harney

Title: Organic Outreach For Families

Authors: Kevin G. Harney & Sherry Harney

The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Review: This book changed my life! Once I started thinking of my home like a lighthouse, I started seeing my family and my neighbors as my mission field. It makes sense that the home is the ideal setting to show love to and reach people for Jesus.

This book was so incredibly wonderful in many ways. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it gave me vision.

When my husband and I bought our first home, we didn't exactly feel welcomed by our new neighborhood. Instead of trying to figure out why they kept to themselves and didn't bother getting to know us, and being bothered by it, like I had for most of the year, this book gave me more perspective.

It caused me to desire to be more proactive in loving them intentionally. When I was done with this book, instead of wishing someone would reach out to us and wondering why they hadn't, I went on a mission. It was the week of Thanksgiving, so I wrote letters telling each neighbor how thankful I was for them, what an answer they were to prayer, how we enjoyed this new quiet neighborhood, etc. I then baked cookies, and delivered both to my surrounding neighbors to the left, the right, and even a few houses across the street.

Now when outside, there is waving, mutual greetings, and they have initiated conversations with us, etc. I am fully convinced that after reading this, you will love harder, have a rekindled passion, and your life will be enriched.

Get Organic Outreach For Families by Kevin G. Harney & Sherry Harney as soon as you possibly can! (You'll be glad you did.)

Endorsements:

“Thank you Kevin and Sherry for crafting a blueprint that will make homes shine brightly on the inside as well as the outside. This book serves as a practical guide for parents to reach people they love and care for on their streets and under their own roofs.”
-David Staal, President of KIDS HOPE USA and author of Lessons Kids Need to Learn

“The home, connected to the local church, is the ideal setting for reaching out to friends and neighbors with the love of Christ. The Harneys offer a solid recipe for Organic Outreach that will help every member of the family—parents and kids alike—participate in the awesome work of advancing Christ’s Kingdom on earth.”

Review: I have heard many points of view on Christmas, from "Jesus is the reason for the season," to "Christmas is from Paganism," and everything in between. Although I don't usually get excited about reading another book about Christmas, this new book by Carl Laferton, 'Christmas Uncut' sparked my interest with the second word in the title. By saying, 'Uncut,' I felt like it was implied that I would get a little something extra.

My expectations to receive something extra were exceeded. This book took a pleasantly unexpected turn by telling the birth of Jesus along with all of the exciting events, without leaving out the details that have been cut for the traditional nativity play. It is packed with humor, and was very enjoyable.

It is with a smile that I recommend it, fully expecting that it will continue to pass on entertainment, inspiration, and humor.

Endorsements:
"An accessible, faithful guide to the actual Christmas story. Let this book help you get to grips with the reality and purpose of Christmas, and introduce you to the person who is at the center of it all.
-Trevin Wax, author of Counterfeit Gospels and Holy Subversion, Gospel Coalition blogger and Managing Editor of The Gospel Project.

This is a great book for people who think they know the Christmas story, and for those who know that they don’t. It’s both creative and historical, simple and insightful, fresh and faithful. It’s a great book, and I hope it is widely read and used.
-Kevin DeYoung, Pastor, University Reformed Church, East Lansing MI

“A humorous, piercing and above all truthful book that challenges our preconceptions of Christmas. Carl writes with wit and a real grasp of modern minds to show us that Jesus can’t stay in the manger.

Christ and the Desert Tabernacle by J.V. Fesko

Title: Christ and the Desert Tabernacle

Author: J.V. Fesko

Why did I read this book: Just the concept of this book, the significance of the temple and tabernacle for Christians, seemed both beautiful and intriguing for me. If there was something valuable to be found here, that I didn't already have or know about, I didn't want to be left out.

Review: Honestly, the sentence on the front cover, 'A volume that is sure to promote greater understanding, admiration, and service,' sums up this book pretty accurately. Fesko did an absolutely phenomenal job of communicating the clear principals of the Bible in a way that also transfers his excitement and enthusiasm as well as expands the knowledge and understanding of the reader.

Before reading this wonderful book, I had no idea how many references, allusions, similarities, and foreshadowings there really were between Jesus Christ and the church, and how they both relate to the tabernacle of the Old Testament, and also the temple that came later in the day of King Solomon.

Christ and the Desert Tabernacle may only have 132 pages, but I assure you that every one of them is rich and full of meaning. I will definitely read it more than once, and expect to get more out of it each time around.

There are parts of the Bible that although I do not skip them when reading through it each year, I do find boring. I sincerely appreciate Christ and the Desert Tabernacle because after going through it, some of the areas that had seemed 'dry' to me in the past, have now been watered with a passionate rain of greater understanding, allowing the seeds of significance that were already planted there to bloom, producing a bountiful harvest. I now know that when I revisit them, instead of being bored, I will be able to remember the ways that they tie in to Jesus, and admire His marvelous sacrifice and beautiful love.

I recommend this work by J.V. Fesko, and expect it to bless your life even more than it has my own.

Notable Quotes/Parts:"I hope to be able to show readers, young and old alike, that far from being boring or uninteresting, the Old Testament tabernacle, and later the temple in Solomon's day, is a shadowy picture of Christ and the church. True, people are perhaps easily able to draw the connections between Jesus and the sacrificial animals, as Jesus is identified as the one and only true sacrifice who takes away our sins (e.g., Heb. 8-10; 1 John 2:2); but beyond these obvious connections, the Old Testament tabernacle is literally an entire world of references, allusions and foreshadows of Christ and the church. One need not go very far to uncover the connections between Jesus and the Old Testament tabernacle -- the New Testament reveals them to us. If you read about the Old Testament tabernacle in the light of the New Testament, you will never think the descriptions of the tabernacle and its furnishings are boring. Instead, you will be filled with hope and assurance, knowing that Jesus Christ, the true tabernacle, has come to redeem his people, living stones, and unite us to him, the one true foundation, so that we would become the eternal temple of the living God." (p. 12)

Title: Accidental Pharisees
Avoiding Pride, Exclusivity, and the Other Dangers of Overzealous Faith

Author: Larry Osborne

How did I get this book: A complimentary review copy was provided to me by Cross Focused Reviews (A Service of Cross Focused Media, LLC).

Why did I read this book: After becoming nauseated with ‘arguments’ over specifics in ‘the law,’ seeing some ‘Christians’ harshly judging others, and as the author puts it, people being ‘more focused on thinning the herd than expanding the Kingdom,’ just seeing this title alone was more than refreshing.

My initial impulse to review Accidental Pharisees was to figure out how a person goes from loving Jesus to becoming ‘over zealous’ and ‘accidentally’ becoming a ‘Pharisee,’ so that I could learn from their their mistakes in hopes of avoiding the same fate.

Although if I am being truly honest, the fuel behind my desire to find out more on this topic was also inwardly so that I would have ‘ammunition’ to confront these people and convince them of the error of their ways in hope that they would change. What I ended up receiving, however, was a lot more than I bargained for.

Review: When I first opened Accidental Pharisees and read all of the gushing, glowing reviews spilling over the first few pages, I thought to myself, "Okay, there's no way it can be that good," and I was right, it was better.

"Who were the Pharisees? How did their name become associated with hypocrisy and misguided zeal for God? And exactly how short (and subtle) is the journey from high commitment to high treason?" This work addressed these and many more questions, and the answers you receive, are surprising.

With Bible-based, sound Christian teaching, this thin book packs quite a punch. At the end of each chapter, there are sets of questions for the reader to answer on his or her own. The writing style is easy to read, very down to earth, and even at times brings forth laughter, but as valuable as this 'new' information is to the reader, it gets better still. The very best part about this book is what it shows you about yourself

Some of the reviews in the front of Accidental Pharisees state with all conviction that this book should be read by everyone in church leadership. When I first read that concept and began to see it resounding again and again, I was skeptical, and now I disagree. Accidental Pharisees should be mandatory reading for all Christians

If you know someone else who needs to change, this book is a great place to start, because without it, we would only see the spec of dust in their eye, and not the log in our own.

Thank you Larry, for providing believers with the knowledge to protect themselves from becoming an Accidental Pharisee, and for giving us knowledge to bring forth compassion and empathy instead of initial judgement, so what when we see a brother or sister who has crossed the line, we can pray for them instead of following suit to show them the error of their ways.

Notable Quotes/Parts:

Chapter 1 - Accidental Pharisees: The Dark Side of Overzealous Faith:
“It’s about accidental Pharisees-people like you and me who, despite the best of intentions and a desire to honor God, unwittingly end up pursuing an overzealous model of faith that sabotages the work of the Lord we think we’re serving.” (p. 17)
“You’ve probably known a jerk for Jesus, someone who thought they were advancing the cause of the kingdom when in reality they were simply embarrassing the King.” (p. 18)

Chapter 4 - The Curse of Comparison: What T-Ball Taught Me About Pride:
“I have no idea what tempts you to feel superior. I have no idea what kind of people you’re tempted to look     down on. But most of us have a list-or at least the beginnings of a list. And most of us have no idea how dangerous that list is. If left in place, it can nullify all the good that we do; it can put us at the top of God’s “I hate it when you do that” list.” (p. 48)

Chapter 8 - The Reason Jesus Came: Why Thinning The Herd Can Be a Bad Idea: “Jesus didn’t come to thin the herd. He didn’t come to recruit “special ops” Christians. His goal was to expand the kingdom, to bring salvation to people who  previously were excluded. He came to seek and find the lost, including a large group of folks no one else wanted to invite to the party. Everything  about Jesus’ ministry was designed to make salvation and the knowledge of God more accessible.”  (p.74-75)

Chapter 11 - Extra Rules and Extra Fences: The Danger of Adding to God’s Word: “That’s how legalism works. It takes our desire to be scrupulously faithful to Scripture and turns it into subtle additions to Scripture. It focuses our attention on what we think Scripture means rather than  what  it actually says.”  (p.98)

Chapter 14 - Learning From the Past Without Idolizing the Past: An Honest Look at the New Testament Church: “As long as we are being brutally honest about the New Testament church and its leaders, we need to note one more thing. The apostle Paul planted some pretty lame churches. That’s why he
had to write all those letters.”  (p.128)
“All of this helps to explain why I consider our idolization of the New Testament church to be a rose-colored memory. It’s why I always ask people who deride the present-day church and long for a return to the New Testament church, “Have you actually read the New Testament?”” (p. 129)

More About the Book: “Zealous faith can have a dangerous, dark side. While recent calls for radical Christians have challenged many to be more passionate about their faith, the down side can be a budding arrogance and self-righteousness that 'accidentally' sneaks into our outlook.

In Accidental Pharisees, bestselling author Larry Osborne diagnoses the most common traps that can ensnare Christians on the road to a deeper life of faith. Rejecting attempts to turn the call to follow Christ into a new form of legalism, he shows readers how to avoid the temptations of pride, exclusivity, legalism, and other common errors.

Larry reminds us that attempts to fan the flames of full-on discipleship and call people to Christlikeness should be rooted in love and humility. Christians stirred by calls to radical discipleship, but unsure how to respond, will be challenged and encouraged to develop a truly Christlike zeal for God.”–Cross Focused Reviews Media Kit

Inner Struggle, Pain & Suffering, Beauty for Ashes

As most of you know, I have been dedicating my life towards improving my health physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. God has been doing a lot of healing in my life. He has been showing me past hurts, and helping me not only bring what I was unaware of to the surface, but helping me heal, as well. The LORD is so faithful!

I have been through so many terrible situations, and done horrible things, yet when I ask for His forgiveness, and try to improve, He overwhelms me with His love, and carries my burdens for me that before were too heavy to bear. Jesus has been such a dear friend to me and as I start to seek His presence more instead of just what He can do to me, He draws near to me in return and gives me comfort, strength, courage, and direction.

A lot of you know about my 5 pain conditions including Fibromyalgia, Scoleosis, Degenerative Disk Disease, Degenerative Joint Disease, and Hypermobile Joint Syndrome. You are also aware of how my medication (but mostly inner pain and struggle) caused me to gain a tremendous amount of weight.

My body started to show on the outside the suffering I was experiencing on the inside. I knew the weight added to my depression and anxiety, but because of the pain, and not believing my worth and identity in Christ, I believed that it was literally impossible for me to lose weight, and that I would be destined to continue to gain, have more bad pain days, and more days being unable to get out of bed.

On Father’s Day of this year, back in the middle of June, my scale told me I weighed 305 pounds. I felt helpless and disgusted, but that day was also the day that I had my breakthrough. In whatever we are dealing with, sometimes it takes reaching the point of 'enough' to fight back.

Well, 305 was my 'enough' point. I couldn't handle anymore oppression, and my body couldn't handle anymore weight. My spine had become so compressed that everything was painful and my skin even felt like it was burning because of the pressure on my nerves. I knew because of a near lifetime of failed attempts that I couldn't do this on my own, but that it had to be done, so I turned to God and prayed.

It was time to fight for my life and I knew going in the direction I had been headed wasn't an option. It was time to change. I started reading the Bible daily, and God transformed me from the inside out. I used to see myself as a 600 lb person, so I ate like one, and my weight increased. (the Bible says, “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”)

I started to read about my value and worth, my identity in Christ, and who God says I am. Whenever I was confronted by feelings that didn't match up with His word in the Bible, I would speak the truth out loud. (I have 2 sheets of paper with everything that the Bible says we are typed out, if anyone is interested.)

I started eating healthier, and five small meals a day (every 2-3 hours). Then came the challenge: God told me to start working out and exercising 5 days a week. At the time, I didn’t have the energy to support sitting in my recliner five days a week, let alone going to the gym. But I don’t live by feelings, I live by faith and obedience to the LORD.

I reasoned that even though I didn’t think my body could do it, God would not tell me to do something that He had not equipped me for. So I started exercising in faith. Was it more difficult than I thought it would be? Yes. Did it hurt even more than I imagined it would? Yes. There were times when I was fighting for each second of cardio. But I told myself that I am fighting for my life, and would just imagine my newborn niece and 2 & 3 year old nephews cheering me on, saying, "You can do it, 'Auntie Sarah,"so I pushed harder. Many times I was moving by prayer asking God for more strength to sustain me. And you know what, He did.

Through this experience, my faith has greatly been increased. God has shown me he will supply all of my needs for each day in order that I may do what He has asked me to do. I may not have the ability on my own, but the joy of the LORD is my strength.

It has been a little over three months now since I started this journey with Jesus, and I have less pain, I move more easily, I have a greater hunger and thirst for righteousness, and as of today when I showed up to do my weekly Monday weigh in at my sister’s house, her scale said I weighed 272.8 lbs.

I have lost 32.2 lbs in the past three months! I have 122.8 lbs to go, and I expect to be in the 250’s by Christmas. Don’t worry, I’ll post pictures so that you can see less of me.

I honestly never thought I’d see the 270’s again three months ago. Now I know I won’t, but it’s because I’m breaking through it, instead of it being not achievable. I really can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and you can too.

God loves you and longs to be close to you, you’re precious to Him. The only thing separating you from God is sin. The Bible, God’s Word, says that the wages of sin is death. Since we have all sinned, that means we all deserve to die, because we can never be good enough on our own to be in the presence of a Holy God. Thankfully, because He is also loving, sent His son Jesus to die for you, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Life does not have to be this difficult or seem empty. All you have to do is pray. Out loud say something like this: “Jesus, I’m sorry for my sins, please forgive me. Thank you for dying for me and paying the price for my sins so that I can go to Heaven when I die. Please come into my life.” If you prayed this prayer, you are forgiven and when God looks at you, instead of your faults, He sees the perfect life of Jesus, who took the punishment of death in your place.

I encourage you to read your Bible every day, as it renews your mind and transforms you from the inside out. Talk to God about everything (pray). He’s always there, and He is faithful. He’s the best friend you could ever have.

I love you, and so does the LORD! Thank you for reading, may God bless you.

Love in Christ,
Sarah Jean Cobb

'The School of the Seers' by Jonathan Welton

'The School of the Seers' by Jonathan Welton is a life-changing book that I purchased through Amazon this month. As someone with the gift of discernment, I longed for more information about, as well as training for my gift. However, it seems impossible to try to find a Godly Bible-based source of real information on the topic. I also didn't know the difference between a Prophet, a Seer, or the levels in which the Gift of Discernment operates. In 'The School of the Seers,' Jonathan Welton addresses all of these topics and more.

This book is Bible-based, having an abundance of scripture and examples to back everything up. It shares the revelations and visions that Jonathan and his friends have seen, as well as some wonderful experiences where he was able to ‘see’ God at work. It is not slanted or written from an ignorant bias, either, as it also addresses the main complaint of Americans with the Gift of Discernment: sensing mostly evil, and not good. In addition to this, the author not only honestly addresses it in a refreshing way, but provides an explanation as well as a solution to the problem, which has helped me in my personal life, especially my relationship with the LORD.

So what else can you expect within this literary work? Expect lessons, wisdom, and knowledge on each topic, followed by practical application, and exercises to increase your own ‘seeing’ ability at the end of each chapter. From reading this book, the level of my faith has increased drastically, and I can’t recommend it strongly enough. As believers, we should all have some level of discernment, and I believe this book will be helpful to everyone who reads it.
